How to photograph a CMR

For Sigil to read the CMR correctly, photograph the whole document and make sure all the text is legible.
How to take a good photo
- Take the CMR out of the sleeve or foil. Do not shoot through a transparent sleeve: it reflects and can cover part of the text.
- Put the CMR on a flat surface. The document should lie flat, without folds or creases.
- Hold the phone straight above the document. The camera should be parallel to the CMR. Do not shoot from the side or at an angle.
- Photograph the CMR upright. The document should be in its proper vertical orientation — not sideways and not upside down.
- The whole page must be in frame. Make sure all four edges of the CMR are visible. Do not crop the top, the bottom or the sides.
- Avoid glare and shadows. Use even lighting. Direct sunlight, lamp reflections and hard shadows should not fall on the document.
- Check the sharpness. Before sending, open the photo and make sure the text, figures, vehicle plates and other entries can be read.
Right
The photo is fit for reading if:
- the CMR is out of any sleeve or foil
- the camera is level above the document
- the document was shot upright
- the whole page and all four edges are visible
- there is no strong glare or shadow
- the text is sharp and legible
Wrong
Do not upload the photo if:
- ✕ the CMR is in a transparent sleeve or under foil
- ✕ the document was shot at an angle
- ✕ the CMR is turned sideways
- ✕ part of the page is cut off
- ✕ there is strong glare or shadow on the document
- ✕ the photo is blurred or the text cannot be read
Before sending
Look at the photo once more. If you can clearly read the whole document, it can go into Sigil.
If part of the text, a plate, an address, a stamp or a handwritten entry reads poorly — take a new photo.
